Ditch the Guilt: Why is Self-Care Important for Women

Updated: May 30

In the modern world, women wear multiple hats, from career professionals to dedicated caregivers, making the concept of self-care feel like a luxury.

As a career coach and business mentor for women, I see a lot of talented, driven women struggling with the same thing: making time for self-care. Why is Self-Care Important for Women? It's a topic that has come up often in conversation with guests on my podcast, Recipes for Success, as truly successful women embrace self-care as a cornerstone of a fulfilling career and a happy life.

Like most things in life, self care is a skill you can learn to cultivate. In my 20s, I often (read always!) put myself last, skipping things that mattered to me like family events, eating well and exercising, to work more. I was praised for this, promoted even, and told that I was dedicated, determined and ambitious. However, all this giving to everyone else at the expense of myself, left me feeling stressed, depleted and bitter.

Self-Care: More Than Bubble Baths (although Those Can Help Too!)

Self-care isn't just about bubble baths and face masks (though there's definitely a place for those!). It's about the intentional actions you take to nurture your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It's getting enough sleep, eating healthy, exercising, managing stress, and making time for hobbies and relaxation. Sounds great, right?

So why is it so hard to prioritize self-care, especially for women in their 30s, 40s & 50s?

The Biggest Block: The "Selfish" Myth

The biggest culprit is the misconception that self-care is selfish. We, as women, are often conditioned to put others first. We're the nurturers, the caregivers. But here's the truth: prioritising self-care isn't selfish, it's essential.

Think about it like this: on an airplane, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first before helping others. Why? Because you can't help anyone if you're passed out from oxygen deprivation! The same goes for life. You can't pour from an empty cup.

Why is Self-Care Important for Women: Self-Care Sends a Powerful Message

By prioritising self-care, you're sending a powerful message:

  • To yourself: You are worthy of care and attention.

  • To others: You deserve to have your needs met.

  • To those you love: It's okay to have bounda ries and take care of yourself.

Breaking Generational Patterns

For some women, particularly those from certain generations, self-care feels downright self-indulgent. They grew up with the message that their needs come last. Think of the stereotype of the "superwoman" who juggles everything with ease. This can make self-care feel completely alien. But remember, you're not being selfish, you're redefining what it means to be a strong, capable woman.

Start Small and Celebrate Every Win

Making self-care a habit takes time. So start making small, positive changes. This could look like a 10-minute walk in the morning, saying no to an extra commitment, or taking your morning cup of tea outside in the sunshine. After all, every action you take is a vote for the life you truly desire.

Remember, you are a powerful force, both in your career and your personal life. By prioritising self-care, you're investing in yourself and your future. You deserve to feel your best, and when you do, you'll be unstoppable!
